Ranking Member Scott Statement on Trump Directive to Pull Harvard’s Tax-Exempt Status
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce released the following statement after reports that the Trump Administration asked the Internal Revenue Service to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status.
“With history as our guide, the President cannot weaponize the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) against his political enemies. I have not seen any evidence that Harvard has broken the law and is deserving of having their tax-exempt status revoked.
“If the reporting is true, this would be consistent with the Trump Administration’s practice of taking legally questionable actions and seeking retribution on President Trump’s perceived enemies. I condemn the Administration’s latest action, and demand that it immediately reverses course.
“Finally, I am most upset about the needless harm this will cause to the students at Harvard, as well as all of us who rely on Harvard’s exceptional research. America’s ability to remain competitive on the global stage should not be undermined by the legally dubious actions of this Administration.”
